Winner of Brwydr y Bandiau 2011 revealed

BBC Radio Cymru’s C2 programme on May 4 that the winner of Menter Iaith Cymru and BBC Radio Cymru’s Brwydr y Bandiau/Battle of the Bands competition is Siân Miriam from Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni, Anglesey. The 17 year old pupil will now get the opportunity to perform at various high-profile musical events, record a session for C2 and get coverage in the music press as part of the prize.
Following months of competing all over Wales, four acts made it to the final last night, all with very different musical styles. Battling for the title alongside Siân Miriam were Y Saethau from Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen, Caernarfon; Downhill, Ysgol Maes yr Yrfa, Cefneithin and Swnami from Coleg Meirion Dwyfor, Dolgellau.
“The standard in the final this year is particularly high, and any of the four are worthy winners,” said Radio Cymru C2 presenter Magi Dodd before the programme.
“What's nice is that each one offers something different to the competition, and there’s something for everyone. It’s a real pleasure to follow the development of the competitors - from seeing them live, being sent to professional recording studios and then seeing the winner take full advantage of the award on the Maes B stage or when they record their C2 session.”
The finalists all had the opportunity to record their song for the final in a professional recording studio, and after they were broadcast on C2, the phonelines opened for the listeners to cast their votes.
When the winner was announced later in the programme, the screams were proof of Sian Miriam’s delight at hearing the news.
On the Dafydd a Caryl programme on Radio Cymru this morning (May 5), her first interview since hearing the news, Sian Miriam talked about how excited she is to have won the title and revealed that Caryl Parry Jones was one of the people who inspired her to start composing and performing at the age of 9.
She described winning as “the best night of my life” and added about performing at the Eisteddfod’s Maes B – “I can’t tell you how exciting that will be!”
The winning package includes
recording a session for C2
performing at the Eisteddfod’s Maes B
performing at Huw Stephens’ Sŵn Festival
a full-page spread in Y Selar music magazine
a professional photoshoot
performing at the Youth Village at the Royal Welsh
